Award-winning producer and documentary director, Julia Parnell started her film and television career in 1997 by attending Southseas Film and Television School in Auckland, New Zealand. From there, she went on to work at several independent television companies, including Eyeworks Touchdown, Screentime and Greenstone Pictures, before becoming the Head of Production at ButoBase Film & TV Company.

Within her 11-year career as an independent producer she has created a diverse range of factual television projects, documentaries and documentary series. In recent years Julia has expanded into feature film development and producing drama with four NZFC-funded theatrical shorts Hitch Hike, Friday Tigers (NZIFF Best New Zealand Short Film 2013), Dive (2014 Show Me Shorts Best Film and Best Script) and Rising Dust. Currently Julia is in production on two TV3 series Both Worlds and Arranged, a Prime Rocks documentary on rock legends Dragon and is executive producer of Loading Docs a launchpad for New Zealand documentary shorts, where Julia is nurturing documentary talent through a program focused on story and creative treatment, outreach and distribution development.
