In May of 2009, a Swedish video game developer, Markus Persson or “Notch” as he was known online, created a small independent video game known as “Minecraft” a simple, sandbox-survival style game. Little did he know the significant cultural impact that small indie game would have on not just the video game community but the entire world. Famous for it’s cute aesthetic, intuitive game design and infinite potential, Minecraft is now critically acclaimed, being cited as one of the greatest and most influential games of all time and is the biggest selling video game of all time. This is the story of how a game went from independent to global and cultural icon and a staple in modern pop culture. And how one mans side project, became the one of largest franchises on planet earth.
